Susan (Edinburgh) wrote on 17 August 2009 I ate there a couple of months ago with my mum and really liked the food. I'm not vegetarian and neither is she but we read the menu a few times and thought it all sounded delicious before we even realised it was all veggie! The portions were a great size for the price when we went as well.
As for the staff, we had a nice friendly waitress but I'd agree with the first review that the others considered fashion choice to be more important that any customer service. That's the same in a lot of west-end places though when depending what shift you get can change the quality of staff. Helen (Birmingham, UK) wrote on 26 June 2009 Never found out what the food was like because the staff ignored us!
We were staying at a hotel just round the corner and thought it'd be a convenient place to eat. We walked in and looked about - couldn't really work out if we were supposed to just take a table or wait to be seated. A waitress came past with a condiment for someone and pointedly looked at the floor instead of at us. So we sat at a table, and assumed we would be brought a menu. We waited a few minutes and no-one came, so my boyfriend went to the bar to get some drinks and a menu.
And he was completely ignored by the staff! Both women at the bar pointedly avoided his eye and looked at the floor. One was serving some customers, which seemed to involve chatting, and the other was faffing about with something. My boyfriend tried to attract her attention and she kept turning away!
Also, someone else in the place was quite obviously laughing at me. There is nothing particularly unusual about my appearance, so maybe she was laughing because I didn't look like an escapee from an 80s bad taste party. Or maybe they find it funny watching bemused customers get more and more annoyed the further they are ignored by the incredibly rude staff!
I'm vegetarian for moral reasons, not because I think I need it to be cool. It's hard finding purely veg restaurants and to be completely ignored by the staff is not on!
And the same thing happened to us at Mono, which is owned and run by the same people. Laughable!
My advice? AVOID!!!!! Janeycat (West End, Glasgow) wrote on 24 January 2009 An Irish vegan acquaintance of mine calls this place 'pretentious' - he could be right, or alternatively, are we just surprised to see a vegetarian restaurant that makes its eco-credentials look effortless, grown-up and sexy? (As opposed to designed by loveable hippies, with political wall murals and copious quantities of acid green colouring on the menus...)
It's slightly more expensive than you'd expect a restaurant built next to a huge Student Residences to be, but this is for a reason: it's a smart, plush place that caters on all eco-fronts (organic cider, some would argue, isn't tailored for a student budget, it's just those of us who want to care about it deliberately MAKE room in our budget for it!). I really like it for not 'talking down' to students and taking a chips-with-everything approach.
I was living in said Residences whilst the place was being built and was in mostly in its early days - it was having a few teething troubles with weird dj's, but on the whole was shaping up to be a very elegant venue indeed. From what I hear, it has continued on this course, and yes, the dessert menu IS orgasmic. Caroline Snow (Inverness) wrote on 25 October 2008 This is my favourite bar/restaurant in the world. I can eat everythind in the knowledge that it is always vegan, always organic & always absolutely fantastic. Whatever you, plan for pudding - the chocolate torte is the best thing that I ever put into my mouth. I have considered kidnapping the chef, but fear human rights violations are probably somewhat unvegan, so he remains free at the moment. The veggie burgers are the best too - top them with vegan cheese, hummous, mushrooms or onions, chilli wrap is fab. too, - lots more to choose from & there's a special on the board if you fancy a change from the menu. The bar is small(ish), but has a great feel, the fire will be lit on colder days, tables will be out the front on hotter days. It's a short walk from the museum & the uni. & it does takeaways too (but I'd eat in by choice). The staff are friendly & welcoming & it's an easy place to spend a lot of time in. I have taken & I will take, my friends & visitors here as it never fails to be a great place to eat & drink.
