Having seen good reviews and awards, I was quite disappointed by our recent visit to King William IV. Soup of the day was great, but mains and desserts were quite poor, and nowhere near the >£30/head price. My main was £12 for a 10cm x 5 cm wedge of mostly potato-filled puff pastry -incredibly poor value for a dish without even a protein ingredient-, whilst a companion’s aubergine gratin (although massive) was too dry to eat. Problems were only compounded by the service order to our table- pastry dishes (which are only really good soon after leaving the oven) arrived far in advance of grills, roasts, and finally, pasta (which can easily sit), and the basil sauce on my plate was frigid by the time I started eating. The accompanying vegetables, too, were swimming in butter to the point that sauces just couldn’t stick. Desserts (despite costing around £7) don't appear to be made on site (but apparently don't have ingredients written down), and waitstaff betrayed a lack of concern about vegetarianism - one waitress said she thought I was joking when I asked if the mousse was vegetarian, and didn't contradict by order of a black/white chocolate torte- which actually turned out to be (another) mousse), and so obviously was unlikely to be vegie. I'd avoid this place like a plague. There isn't much in the area, but that's no excuse!

The vegetarian menu is excellent. The menu does change, and the last time we went it meant there were only 2 choices for the vegans (and we wouldn't recommend the curry!). The pub has a lovely old English pub atmosphere and a good beer garden. Main meals cost around the £10.50 mark - but is well worth it!

Vegetarian food is excellent, range wide. Non-veg. menu is extensive also. Reasonably priced, beautifully clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Winner of best vegetarian food for last two years.
