Global Cafe at RISC 35-39 London Street Telephone: 0118 958 3555 Web: www.risc.org.uk International Fairtrade Vegan Free Range Local Produce Organic Beth Lane (Carterton) wrote on 23 March 2008 Nice, laid-back atmosphere. Kid-friendly. Friendly service. Delicious food. We started with pita and hummus and had the vegetarian/vegan Ethiopian platter and the Ethiopian lamb soup. (More basic meals available include jacket potatoes and baguettes.) For dessert, we had lemon drizzle cake and coffee & walnut cake. All were fabulous. Wide variety of drinks available including organic beers, juices, teas and coffees. We will definitely go back! Phil Child (Redditch) wrote on 30 December 2006 A really relaxed atomsphere, particularly child friendly. The menu is truly varied, offering jacket spuds to international dishes. Over recent months a new Ethiopian chef has joined the team and this has an impact on the meals available (for the better, although they were smashing before!). The 'injurers' are recommended, these coming in at £7.50 for a platter ('injurer' refills being free!). On the latest visit a family of four were fed for around £35, including drinks and a slab of vegan cake. They also stock a good range of beers (much appreciated), give the chance to visit the fair-trade shop next door and are open both during the day and the evening. They can even provide a private room for functions. Fantastic. Sophie Fenwick (Reading) wrote on 19 July 2001 The menu here has improved a lot since the caterers changed a few months ago. It now is 90% vegetarian and about 50% of its hot dishes are vegan. On top of this the food is tastier than before, so it can compete with Cafe Iguana, has a smoke free area and is exceptionally child-friendly. Wheelchair/pram access to whole dining area. Environmentally-friendly and fair-traded products are sold in the adjoining shop. Sophie Fenwick (Reading) wrote on 11 July 2000 The menu changes daily and has strong veggie leanings. It sometimes has vegan dishes but is a bit unreliable as they sometimes sell out or can't tell you if the specials are vegan or not. They often run out of soya milk but do make good soya cappuccinos when available. They have a wide selection of unusual foreign beers, and the atmosphere is great, if smokey, in the evenings, when there is sometimes a cover charge. There is a no smoking area during the day. Open Monday lunchtime, and lunchtime till late Tues to Sat. The management seems to be up for tender, so this all may change. |
