It isn't cheap and the portions are not huge, but my starter of artichokes with mushroom duxelles in a beer batter on puy lentils was fabulous, one of the best vegan courses I have ever eaten. My mains of burmese salad was good, the sauce and the seitan delicious. There weren't that many vegan puds to choose from, the vegan choc icecream was ok, if unimaginative, but overall the meal was delicious, and very enjoyable, and with one kir royale came out at about £37 each. Emma Woodcock (Belper) wrote on 11 February 2007 A bit pricy, but very good. Had an excellent orange and watercress salad starter. Also some lovely homemade sorbet for dessert (the lychee was particularly good). Was slightly less impressed with the main. Had a chickpea & root vegetable tagine with pomegranite couscous. The pomegranite had massive pips in which I had to pick out cuz they were really gritty. The tagine was nice, but not all that remarkable. Paid about £35 for three courses, two glasses of wine and a cup of tea. John Hilary (London) wrote on 3 April 2000 Simply unmatched if you're after a high-class vegetarian meal - top quality food excellently prepared and nicely presented. Sit outside in the courtyard if you go in Summer. Chris Tucker (London) wrote on 13 February 1999 A smart restaurant, set in the roof of a church, The Gate promises much, and if you pick the right meal is fabulous. Some of their creations are, however, a little ambitious! Vegetarian wine selection. |
