Having heard good reviews of this restaurant, my partner and I made a visit here a part of our valentine's weekend away. I'm afraid we were disappointed. The starter of beetroot and fennel salad with orange and tarragon dressing was a nice idea, but if the beetroot had been better cooked rather than partly raw then the flavour would have really stood out. The main courses did not live up to expectations either: the butternut squash in the spinach, feta and butternut filo parcel was undercooked so as to be crunchy, when we made a polite complaint we were told "that's our style, it's al dente". Now there are certain things for which this 'style' works, and squash is not one of them. The green beans accompanying the other main meal if cooked 'al dente' would have been better than the almost raw ones I received. Dessert? Disappointing if you expected the tiramisu to actually BE tiramisu. Layered chocolate cake with whipped cream does not a tiramisu make - I should know my brother-in-law is a chef and makes a great one! When I politely expressed my feelings to the manager she rather condescendingly brought out a book of culinary terms and pointed out the definition of tiramisu, saying that their's fitted this. She must have been reading a different line, as it perfectly described the tiramisu I am used to - sponge soaked in espresso with liquer and mascarpone custard cream - yum! Whatever happened to the customer being right? I was polite and friendly but the manager certainly wasn't. The coffee was nice.

Quite possibly the best (VEGAN!!!) meal I have ever eaten. I never knew a cheesecake could taste that good! Everything was quite simply delicious!!! Excellent atmosphere, lovely staff, beautiful setting in the heart of the lake district. The only two gripes are that it is quite difficult to find, and it certainly is not cheap (£52 for a 3 course meal for two) but it is worth it.
