However, it does get really busy and they don't take bookings so best to turn up at 12 when they open. The food is great, portions generous and the staff are friendly. Bearing in mind the awful veggie choice you usually get in 'standard' restaurants, its so refreshing to go somewhere and be able to pick from anything on the menu so even if Food For Friends was expensive (which it isn't), I would still go there. John Hardman (West Sussex) wrote on 26 June 2007 More than a year since my last review (although not since my last visit!). Everything just as good this time. Still good value, still fantastic food. Dessert to die for this time was the Black Pepper Ice Cream (a vegan dish despite the Ice Cream description). Background noise level was a bit high, but music was turned down without complaint when asked. Will be going back again soon. John Hardman (West Sussex) wrote on 5 March 2006 Three months since our previous visit. Even more impressed than last time. This time we pre-booked, which is now advisable for Saturday evenings. Service was very friendly and quicker than when we last visited. Nice relaxed atmosphere. I had a completely vegan menu - soup of the day (leek and potato), Malaysian curry, chocolate tofu and fruit tart, washed down with a vegan banana smoothie, Australian red wine and coffee. My wife had Caesar salad, stuffed Portobello mushrooms and Bramley apple tarte tatin, with a non-vegan banana smoothie, tomato juice and fruit tea. The only negative thing about any of the food/drink was that the smoothies were disappointing as the bananas used were under-ripe. However, everything else was fabulous. I have to give particular mention to the vegan chocolate, tofu and fruit tart which was rich but absolutely amazing. Portions were huge as always. Total price for the two of us was £52.70. Would definitely go back. T. Isted (Lewes) wrote on 27 January 2006 Can't praise this restaurant enough. Excellent food, the best vegetarian I or my sister have had! Varied and interesting menu with fantastic flavours. Friendly staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. Well worth a visit. John Hardman (West Sussex) wrote on 19 November 2005 Not being able to book in advance (very annoying) we passed by Food for Friends a couple of times during peak hours when no tables were available, before finally squeezing in off-peak in October. The service was fairly friendly but very slow. The environment is very basic, like sitting at someone's kitchen table - definitely not a restaurant with airs and graces (fine by me!). Between two of us we shared one starter and one main course. Both were huge and with the choices that we made we failed to finish even what we had. For starter we had an Indian Thali which was absolutely delicious, even better than the starter that I reviewed for Terre a Terre. We followed this with snorkers and crush with caramelised red onion gravy (basically vegetarian bangers and mash). After the exquisite mixture of flavours in the starter, this was uninspiring but not unpleasant. Together with a soft drink each the total price came to £26.50. Would I go back again? Definitely yes, although I would probably try to find something more inspiring than the snorkers and crush next time. Kathryn Turnbull (Brighton) wrote on 17 September 2005 This restaurant used to serve excellent food at an excellent price and had a loyal following. Since it has changed ownership, it has been refurbished in a great modern and contemporary style but become expensive and the food dull and uninspiring. The new owner was extremely rude and unprofessional when I broke my tooth on an olive stone found in my houmous(!) Sadly, I no longer visit or recommend this restaurant. Jane Wrin (Weybridge) wrote on 15 March 2004 Used to like this place but have, over the past 18 months, visited it about 4 times and each time found the service slow, food minimal & unadventurous and overpriced. Sorry but would not recommend if you are actually hungry. Emma Thorpe (Manchester) wrote on 16 May 2002 Gorgeous food at very reasonable prices. The staff are lovely and really put themselves out for our special occaision - I would recommend this place to anyone! |
