First looked very clean and well maintained place(not sure if i would call it a restaurant,it is more like a annexe for a sweet shop).
Hospitality is a total let down as the staff will be asking for things with visual gestures( raising eyebrows which could mean what you want?). The person who serves food will be handing over plates to your rather than placing them on the table.
Food-No gr8.I would never recommend it to a friend and would never go there again.
Sweet shop looked ok but the taste is not best either.

So all in all it is a basic eatery place than a restaurant and i am pretty sure Jamie Oliver's picture on the website of the restaurant does not reflect the actual ground situation

I have been visiting Jyoti now for 10 years approx. The food is exceptional in both flavour and price. The service is very good, and I like the fresh simple style of the restaurant. It's not covered in gilt and fancy furnishings but just right!

The starters we find are the most apealing part, with our favourites being the mixed bhajya, bhel and especially the pani puri. If Jyoti was in my home town I would be huge as I would not be able to restrain my visiting sessions.

In summary, delicous, cheap , clean and friendly.

(Thank you Jyoti and staff. xx)

We have been to this restaurant several times and have always had a brilliant meal served by attentive friendly staff. Food is brilliant, not swimming in grease and always presented very nicely. Can't go wrong for the price very reasonable. Take away food also good.

I come from India so I know what actual Indian food is. This restaurant serves some kind of vegetarian mishmash directed towards people who have mainly english taste and do not unfortunately know the indian delicacies. The food is below par though very cheap. The rude staff attitude andillmannered behaviour is probably excusable because of the cheap price. Never mind a wasted vening. NEVER AGAIN.

This is now a much more convenient location and it still delivers the goods!
Nice atmosphere, unfussy service and good food.
I ate there on Saturday and will be returning frequently.

Nita (Burton) wrote on 4 May 2009

totally disappointing experience. Staff were however very polite but the food is complete let down. I could not figure out the style of cooking, definitely not authentic North or south Indian.
Would never go again

Small and a little spartan for the setting but the food more than made up for it. None of us are vegetarian but we didn't miss having meat at all.
The starters were really different from others I have tasted on many trips down to the Balti Triangle. Starters and mains shared by us all..all very tasty and well spiced and the price was great - only about £8.50 a head for starters and mains with rice and paratas and we didn't manage to finish them everything. Probably best to book, particularly at the weekends since the restaurant is only a small section at the back of the shop. B.Y.O for alcohol, with a supermarket a few doors away.Plenty parking in this new location. Planning to go back in the next week or two.

Firstly The below comment from the woman incapable of finding the restaurant clearly was in the wrong place because if she was infront the restaurant she would have seen that the take-away was closed with the shutters down and the restaurant side was clearly open!!!

And mr "rajeev!" obviously is just a disgruntled customer because i practicly LIVE at jyoti's and the food, service and waiters are exceptional. Due to the lack of parking in the area that Jyoti's was in, it has now moved further down Stratford Road in Hall Green Where there is plently of parking so the woman with the parking space trouble should have no problem finding it!

On the whole, i love this place and the awards speak for themselves. Try it for your self.

Rajeev (Birmingham) wrote on 8 March 2009

The chefs or the cooks there do not know what the indian vegetarian preparation actually are like or they simply do not know how to prepare them. They also do not know how to serve them politely and in awell mannered way.

I booked a table for 6:00 on the 27th August 08. The people we were with had drove from Worcester, to Redditch to pick us up. We spotted the Jyoti but were unable to see where on earth we would park. The area was so busy with cars, people etc. As we got level we decided we had the wrong place. It was 3 minutes or so past 6:00 and their were shutters down looking as though the place was closed. The shutters looked as if they were covering a garage. There was a little sandwich bar on the side but no Restaurant. So Jyoti more information please for the future. Maps - advice where to park. Most important ... open up on time.

We finished up in Solihul at a large resturant called Jimmys something - lots of parking, losts of people sitting eating. I feel very embarrased and disappointed after the Jyoti being recommended and so my recommending it to my Veggie Neice and Nephew.

The food here is superb and the staff are great.
They also own a sweet centre and take away in Hall Green where the parking is better. They're hoping to get permission to turn this into a second restaurant...please lend your support and sign the petition in the shop!!

Jyoti is fantastic, one of the best restaurants in Birmingham. The dhosas are great, but so are the pani purees and the paneer bhurjis and...well, everything!

Great place for kids, too.

Katherine Hutton (West Midlands) wrote on 30 January 2008

I have eaten here with friends many times and every time the food and service have been excellent. I especially favour the Bhel starter and the Thali is great aswell. I always try to have the coconut ice cream served in a baby coconut shell if they have it.
I would say this is one of my favourite restaurants of all time.

David Bolstridge (Shoreham) wrote on 30 January 2008

Ever since I left Birmingham I miss Masala Dosas! I visit Birmingham from time to time and always visit Jyoti, but I heard that the restaurant was going to relocate. Is this the case? If so can someone supply me with the current address and telephone number please?

AS a representative of jypti begetarian restaurant i'd like to say that Sachin Tendulkar has NEVER visited our restaurant and the above review by him is false.

Fifi (Birmingham) wrote on 28 November 2007

I dream of this place. It is defo worth a visit. The 'spicy whole potato' is to die for (i would - if i couldn't get any!!) The menu is marked if anything is not vegan. An absolute MUST !!!

Jyoti has recently won an award as the best restaurant in Birmingham, beating all the top city centre restaurants. I have been going to this restaurant for years and have always eaten the best vegetarian food. The staff are fantastic, the food delicious. You will now need to book at the weekends, and possibly in the week. It is unlicensed. Average price of main meal is £5.

Sachin Tendulkar (Birmingham) wrote on 20 December 2000

Try the Jyoti Special Masala Dhosa. A wicked atmosphere and calm. Not too expensive. Value for money.

Anjli Thanki (Birmingham) wrote on 13 November 2000

Jyoti restaurant is great. There are not many places which are pure vegetarian. The food is great - you have to try their masala dhosa they are so tasty and the prices are great. It really is value for money.

Deepali Joshi (Birmingham) wrote on 21 August 2000

The dishes to die for are the Jyoti Special Masala Dhosa, Chilli Paaneer and the Jyoti Thali. A calm peaceful atmosphere. An inexpensive restaurant.
